Hade‑Fuman, China’s largest desert oilfield, has produced over 26.0 mln tonnes of oil and gas from depths below 6,000m. ZhenTan‑1, on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, recovered rock cores from 8,080m — the first cores taken deeper than 8,000m on the NW margin of the Tarim Basin; the cores are estimated to be about 500 million years old.
